BEST OPTION: RENEW ONLINE

Requirements:

  1. The vehicle must be currently insured with a company that is registered with the Kentucky Office of Insurance. (Insurance purchased within the last 45 days may not be in our database. This will prohibit you from renewing your vehicle online)
  2. If your information displayed on the screen is incorrect, click "CANCEL" and contact our office by email at info@fayettecountyclerk.com with your correct information.
  3. Expired registrations may be renewed online during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  4. Past due property taxes on any other vehicles will prohibit online processing.
  5. Leased vehicles cannot be renewed online.
  6. Payment must be made using Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover.

RENEWAL BY MAIL

What you will need to mail:
  1. Original Certificate of Registration (Photocopies are not acceptable).
  2. Proof of Kentucky Insurance Card.
  3. If the original registration is not available, the current registered owner must sign an Affidavit for Replacement (TC96-167) and have their signature notarized. There will be an additional $3.00 fee for the replacement.
  4. Add $2.00 postage and handling per registration for mail-in renewal.
Any delinquent property tax owed on any other vehicle may prohibit registration renewal.
 
The Department of Revenue mails a courtesy notice two months prior to expiration showing tax and registration fees due.

Payment must be in the form of personal check, cashier's check or money order.

 

To process in person: Make an appointment to visit the Renewal Department

All appointments are at the Fayette County Clerk’s Office, 162 E. Main St., Lexington, KY 40507.

At your designated appointment time, proceed to the 2nd Floor entrance in the Helix Garage to check-in. (Do not use the front doors)  You will then be directed to the appropriate department for your appointment.

A mask will be required while inside the building.

Only the individual renewing will be permitted in the building, anyone accompanying them will have to wait outside.

What you need to bring for renewal:

  3. If the original registration is not available, the current registered owner must sign an Affidavit for Replacement (TC96-167) and will need their government issued photo ID to do so.  This will add $6.00 to the total. 
Any delinquent property tax owed on any other vehicle may prohibit registration renewal.
 
For other transactions processed by the renewal department please have all related paperwork in hand at the time of your appointment.  Do not make an appointment through this link for any transfers/change of ownership, or business related to the recording department (deeds, mortgages, marriage license).
